about

After 24 tracks and 17 artist collaborations, the Beat Excursions series is coming to an end. Not intent to fade away, Kabuki enlisted a number of heavy hitters from the bass music world to go out with a bang.

Kicking things off is „Crossroads“, a collaboration with Exit Records dream team dBridge and Fixate, written over the course of an afternoon at the Abbey Road Institute in Frankfurt redlining their beautiful SSL series desk and tested the same night at the Robert Johnson - hence the title.

Next up is „Chungking Mansions“, a Halftime/Electro hybrid inspired by Kabuki’s trip to Hong Kong in the spring of 2019 where he finally got to visit the iconic location immortalized by Wong Kar-Wai. This track will also be available as an music NFT on OpenSea featuring video footage shot by Kabuki on location.

Japanese noise maven ENA and Kabuki channel early Company Flow and „Kakusei“-era DJ Krush for their jittery Footwork abstraction „Dropped Frames“. The off-the-grid drums provide the rhythmic DNA for a motion sickness-inducing effect.

Rounding out the EP is the melancholic „Keyed Out“, which is following in the footsteps of the broken techno banger „Shimmer“ (released on Beat Excursions #5) that found its way also into the playlists of adventurous main floor DJs. Using similar ideas and concepts but applying them to a UK Garage framework shows how much of the hardcore continuum is still left to explore and recontextualise.
